Sunday Post -- 3/31/13

The Sunday Post is a meme sponsored by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  It's a chance to share news.  A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

I wish a most happy and blessed Easter to everyone who celebrates it!  Likewise, a belated Happy Passover to all who celebrate that holy day.  And may spring -- the actual weather season, not the official designation -- please come soon!

The big book news this week -- for me, anyway -- is the announcement that Amazon is buying Goodreads.  I thought about posting about this in my Sunday Post, but decided I needed more room.  In the end, I wrote two posts, one news-and-commentary, and the other an open letter to Goodreads (which I've also sent via email.)  Look, I know many people are upset about this move, but I really hope everyone will take a deep breath, calm down, discuss it rationally and factually, and wait to see what happens before deleting their Goodreads accounts or loudly predicting the end of the (social reading) world.

The past week on the blog:

The coming week:

  • Tues. 4/02: Top Ten Tuesday: Characters I Would Crush On If I Were A Fictional Character
  • Review of Oz Reimagined and an advance review of The Sweetest Dark
  • Sat. 4/06: News & Notes

All this month I've participating in the Take Control of your TBR Pile challenge sponsored by Kimba the Caffeinated Reviewer.

Sadly, I can't claim to have done terribly well.  I did get about four books read from my TBR pile, but not the stacks I had been hoping to read. I'll have to try again some other month.  This past week, I had to set aside plans to read Scarlet in order to finish a review copy of Oz Reimagined by the end of March.

New arrivals:

For Review:
I was so excited when I was approved for the new Maggie Hope mystery, I almost jumped up and down! The Sabrina Jeffries romance is a novella previously published in an anthology, but I hadn't read it, so I'm looking forward to it, too.

Bought for my eReader:

Can't wait to read the new Robyn Carr!  (Just as soon as I get through some of these ARCs and nearly-due library books...)

  1. I am always reminded, when something changes, that change is a constant in life. And it's not necessarily bad. Yes, it requires adjustment...but then again, what doesn't?

I'm hoping that the change will make it easier to post reviews, since I post mine to both sites.

I'm always trying to read off of my TBR Stacks, as well as review books, new books, etc. It's all those other books that make it a slow journey.

    Here's MY SUNDAY SALON POST

    1. There are certainly ways in which the Amazon-Goodreads thing could prove positive, particularly if they make them optional -- like your wish to make it easier to post reviews to both sites.

And yes, reading down the TRB pile is a slow process when we keep adding all these yummy new books... but so much fun!

  2. Ten Reasons to Stay looks good, and hey 4 books from your TBR pile is good! Happy Easter my friend. I too worry about the GR/Amazon relationship and I guess time will tell. I read your letter and think you raised good questions. The Sunday Post

  3. I was surprised at the number of people who immediately deleted their goodreads account. I'm going to wait and see what happens before I do anything.

Now I'm off to check out your review of Etiquette and Espionage.

I figure any books we read from out TBR pile is success. I didn't read as many as I wanted but I did get some read.

    Happy Easter!

    1. Even one book off the pile is progress, so we should probably both feel good about it!

I was surprised at how many people immediately vilified Goodreads and closed their accounts, too. It makes so much more sense to wait and see how things go. There was a lot of misinformation out there, too particularly about the "ownership" (which in fact is licensing) of review content.

Happy Easter! Or Passover, or Spring!

  4. I have some nearly-due library books to finish too. Our library just expanded its eBooks site, which makes it even easier to over-check-out books, lol. Hope you enjoy The Wanderer!

    1. Our library lets me put (print) books on hold online, which is great -- except when four or six of them come in all at once. They're also really good about renewals, but of course, new books usually have multiple holds on them, so I can't renew those.

And I just finished The Wanderer -- my Easter treat to myself, even though I told myself I'd have to wait. Very good!

    1. I've toyed with the idea of going on a six-month or one-year book diet -- I wouldn't get to buy or even borrow anything new, just read from books already on my TBR list. I've got something like 500 books on it; I wouldn't even get through all of those in a year. But the thought of missing the next Patrick Rothfuss or Deborah Harkness or Rachel Hartman or Jim Hines or ... you get the picture. I just can't do it!

  6. I'm definitely trying to sit back and see what happens with the whole Goodreads situation...I don't want to prematurely panic! Enjoy your new reads!

I love to hear what you have to say -- really! Unfortunately, I've been getting a lot of spam in addition to your wonderful comments, so I've had to turn on comment moderation. That means your comment may not post right away. I promise I'll post it -- and answer it -- as soon as I can!
