Sunday Post -- 5/12/13

Happy Mother's Day to all of you who are moms!  We're celebrating quietly: my husband and daughter are fixing me dinner.  Steaks on the grill and homemade macaroni & cheese -- mmmm! 

Last Sunday's concert was terrific!  I was enormously proud of all my kids in both choruses.  The younger group -- ages 4 to 11, with some older girls mentoring -- sang five songs, two of which were in two parts (opposing melodies, which can be harder than harmonies), and they sounded great.  The older group -- age 11 to 19, with some adults mentoring -- also sang wonderfully; their songs were in three or four parts, and several were pretty challenging.  I am so blessed to be able to work with these terrific young people!

It was a little bittersweet, though... our daughter "Robin" has sung with these groups since she was about 6 (long before I started directing 4 or 5 years ago), and this was her last concert.  She'll be off to college in the fall, nearly a continent away.  I will miss her in many ways, both as her mother and as her director.


I just received a new indexing project will probably take much of my time for the next few weeks, and I'm not sure how much that will affect my available time for reading and reviewing.  Please bear with me if things slip a little over the next few weeks!

Many thanks to Harlequin for letting me read the second book in Robyn Carr's new Thunder Point series, The Newcomer.  Thanks also to Chronicle Books for The Clockwork Scarab, the first in a new steampunk YA mystery series featuring Sherlock Holmes's niece and Bram Stoker's sister.  Sounds irresistible, doesn't it?

Bought for my e-reader:  



A Charming Crime was on sale at Kobo.  It looked cute -- magic, homeopathy, a cat, and it's the start of a new mystery series!  I've been meaning to try Burrowes, so I picked up The Soldier on sale at Kobo.  And the Terry Spear book is thanks to the folks at Discover a New Love, who gave me a coupon for filling out a survey.  I'm not a big werewolf fan, but I liked one or two of the early books in this series.

    Wow, you had a great week! I love the cover of The Apple Orchard...I'll be reading a Susan Wiggs book this upcoming week: Just Breathe.

      It is a nice cover. I haven't read Just Breathe, so I look forward to seeing what you think about it.

      As for ebook freebies and bargain books, I heard about a great site called BookBub. You tell them what categories you're interested in and where you shop for ebooks, and they send you an email every day with the latest bargains that fit those parameters.

      Wow, do I know the feeling. I haven't had as much time as I'd like for reading, and it seems almost all I'm reading is review copies. Not that I'm not enjoying them, but I have so many other books & library books I also want to read!

      And I remembered I wanted to mention to you... Did you hear Confluence Con was canceled? Bummer as I was planning on trying to get there this year. They had some sort of troubles with the hotel reservations. But I remembered you mentioning it.

      Yes, we did. Bummer indeed! The hotel was bought by another company, or something, and is closing for renovations. They couldn't find another venue on short notice. Alpha (the writer's workshop) is trying to figure out what to do. It doesn't affect the actual workshop, thank goodness.

    I'm really looking forward to your Children's Book Week reviews. I love children's books and had so much fun reading them when my children were younger.

    The Clockwork Scarab sounds so interesting.

    I'm glad the concert went well. Both groups sound like they are very good. You are right to be so proud of them all...and should be proud of yourself for being the director. And I know how bittersweet it can be for us when our children are leaving the nest.

      Thank you, Jan! I loved reading to my daughter -- so much that I kept on doing it, and still do. Only now, it's adult books. We're in the middle of the original Deryni trilogy by Katherine Kurtz right now.

      For my own pleasure, I still read some middle grade books, and even the occasional picture book. I think that a really good book can be appreciated at any age... or at least, that older readers can appreciate books intended for younger readers. (The reverse is obviously not always true.)
