Sunday Post -- 3/17/13

The Sunday Post is a meme sponsored by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  It's a chance to share news.  A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!  How are you celebrating?  I'll be wearing green today (once I find my green sweater!), but other than that, my day will focused more on music than on partying: church choir in the morning, and several hours of rehearsals for my children's and youth choruses in the afternoon.  

 It's odd how St. Patrick's Day has become a huge event, even among those with no Irish ancestry.  (My own ancestry is - ahem! - Scots Irish, among other things.  Not a drop of Irish blood as far as I know. I suppose by rights, I should be wearing orange, not green.  But I look awful in orange,  and anyway, my Scots Irish roots are four generations back.  Besides, it's all for fun!)

Between family members getting sick and my voice teacher in the hospital, it's been a bit of a rough week.   I managed to get the scheduled blog posts out -- barely -- but I've gotten very little reading done.

Because of my rough week, I'm not entirely sure what I'll be bringing you this week, other than a review of Splintered, by A. G. Howard;  my usual Saturday feature, News & Notes; and hopefully a few other interesting reviews and tidbits as well.  There may even be a guest review by my daughter.


All this month I'm participating in the Take Control of your TBR Pile challenge sponsored by Kimba the Caffeinated Reviewer.


 

So far, I'm not doing too well with this... Sea Glass Winter was on my TBR list, as is Splintered, which I'm reading now.  I've also read two of Tessa Dare's Spindle Cove romances, which I need to review for the challenge.  This week, I started listening to Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon, which I've been meaning to get to for about a year now.   My daughter and I finally finished listening to The Wise Man's Fear, by Patrick Rothfuss (it was awesome!), but since we started it last fall, I'm not sure I can count it for the challenge.  

Hopefully, once things settle down a bit, I'll have more time to read!

I'm so glad that Bantam is letting me read the sequel to The Sweetest Dark -- I can't wait to start both of them! I enjoyed Mette Ivie Harrison's The Princess and the Hound, and there are some great review-blurbs out there for The Rose Throne, so I'm definitely looking forward to that one as well.

 Thankfully (and most unusually), there's nothing from the library this week, nor did I buy any books. I'm really trying to get to at least some of my huge stack(s) of TBR books... especially the four library books I can't renew!  Wish me luck...

    I always forget about national holidays when I'm doing my Sunday Post and then I see them all over everyone else's page and I wonder how I could forget. Oh well...

    I have Spellbinding too. It's got a great cover, but it's not been reviewed very highly on Goodreads so I'm not exactly stoked about reading it! Hopefully you can find something that sparks your interest for the March Challenge. I'm participating in it too!

      Spellbinding wasn't bad, it just could have been so much better. As for the March TBR Pile Challenge, I've just finished Splintered and Etiquette and Espionage, both of which I thought were pretty good. I'll be over to check out your SP/STS in a little bit!

      It's so hard to get to the TBR pile when the review copies keep coming in (and life keeps happening!) Keep trying -- I've finished two in the last two days, so maybe I'm finally getting back on track a bit. Good luck!

      I haven't seen the movie, but from what I read of it online, it's different from the book in some significant ways. Still, I'd like to see it. Thanks for stopping by!

    I am in engaged in an eternal quest to control my TBR Pile...I created one of my blogs just for that task. I'm managing to diminish the stacks, only to add to them! lol

      Since I keep adding books to my TBR list faster than I get them off it, and the physical pile isn't faring much better, I despair of ever really conquering it. But at least I won't run out of things to read!

    Keep at that TBR pile and The Rose Throne has me curious. We are not Irish but Italian and I will drink a little something later to celebrate my Irish friends. LOL The Sunday Post

      Thank you for the encouragement, Kimba! NetGalley had The Rose Throne on "read it now" (no publisher approval necessary), and since I'd been wanting to read it anyway, I grabbed it. I'm sure I'll be posting a review in the not-too-distant future! As for the TBR pile, I knocked two books off it since Sunday -- huzzah!

    Good luck with taking control of your TBR pile! I think I could focus on that for years and still make no dent in it. Because it's always changing. I WOULD like to dust off some of my older books that have been waiting on my shelves to be read for years now, though. :) But that's not going to happen THIS month!
