Birthdays! Emily Dickinson, Cornelia Funke, Rumer Godden, George MacDonald, Mary Norton, Ernest Shepard!

December 10 is a HUGE day for author (and illustrator) birthdays!  A very happy birthday to:

Emily Dickinson, whose poems continue to inspire and delight.

Cornelia Funke, author of the Inkheart trilogy,The Thief Lord, and Dragon Rider

Rumer Godden. The Doll's House charmed me as a child; as an adult, I love her novel In This House of Brede.

George MacDonald, author of the enchanting fairy tale, The Light Princess, several longer fantasy works for children (At the Back of the North Wind, The Princess and the Goblin, The Princess and Curdie), and a number of short fantasy stories for adults.  His stories influenced C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Madeleine L'Engle, and other noted fantasy writers. His children's fantasies are among my childhood favorites.  MacDonald also wrote novels reflective of his deep Christian faith (Sir Gibbie and many others.)

Mary Norton's Borrowers books have delighted generations of children -- including me!  On a trip to England when I was in fifth grade, I visited the miniature town at Burton-on-the-Water; I was half-convinced that I would find Arriety and her family living there.

Ernest Shepard did the lovely illustrations for the Winnie the Pooh books.  Think "Classic Pooh."

I love to hear what you have to say -- really! Unfortunately, I've been getting a lot of spam in addition to your wonderful comments, so I've had to turn on comment moderation. That means your comment may not post right away. I promise I'll post it -- and answer it -- as soon as I can!
